General

Is PDFwarp really free?

Yes. All 19 core tools are completely free to use with no account required — including Unlock PDF, HTML to PDF, Markdown to PDF, and HEIC to JPG. Free users get 2 conversions per day as a guest, or 5 per day with a free account. Pro unlocks all 13 AI tools, the PDF Editor, and unlimited conversions for $9 USD/month.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can use all free tools as a guest — just upload your file and go. Creating a free account gives you 5 conversions per day instead of 2.

What file size limits apply?

Without an account you can upload files up to 10 MB. A free account raises that to 25 MB. Pro users can upload files up to 500 MB. If your file exceeds your tier, you can either compress it first or upgrade.

What browsers are supported?

PDFwarp works in all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop and mobile. No plugins or extensions required.

Where is PDFwarp based?

PDFwarp is operated by a small independent team based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. For questions or support, email support@pdfwarp.com.

Privacy & Security

Are my files stored on your servers?

No. Uploaded files are processed ephemerally on our servers and deleted after your download completes. We don't keep them for later use, index their contents, or share them with third parties. For AI-powered tools, document content is sent to our AI provider (xAI) for processing only — see our Privacy Policy for details.

Is my data shared with third parties?

The 19 free tools and the PDF Editor do not send document contents to an AI provider. AI tools send extracted text or page images to xAI for that request only — see the next question. We use Google Analytics for traffic statistics only after consent, Stripe for payments, and our support mailbox (SMTP) if you ask us to email a file. We do not sell document contents. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

Is the connection secure?

Yes. All connections to PDFwarp use HTTPS/TLS encryption. Your files are transmitted securely and processed on our servers without being written to permanent storage.

Do AI tools send my documents to third parties?

AI tools use xAI for language processing. Document content is transmitted to xAI for analysis. xAI does not train on API data without explicit permission; by default requests may be retained for up to 30 days for abuse auditing. We recommend removing highly sensitive personal information before using AI tools.

Tools & Features

What tools are free?

All 19 core tools are free: Merge PDF, Split PDF, Compress PDF, Rotate PDF, Reorder Pages, Protect PDF, Unlock PDF, Office to PDF, PDF to Word, PDF to Excel, Images to PDF, PDF to Images, Convert Image, HEIC to JPG, HTML to PDF, Markdown to PDF, CSV to Excel, Excel to CSV, and Text to PDF.

What tools require Pro?

Pro tools include the PDF Editor (edit text directly in any PDF) and all 13 AI-powered tools: Summarize, Chat with Doc, Translate, Form Fill, Redact, Compare, Write, Extract, Contract Analyzer, Invoice Generator, Originality Check, OCR, and Classifier.

What is the PDF Editor?

The PDF Editor is a Pro tool (not an AI tool). It extracts selectable text boxes with PyMuPDF so you can click, drag, and retype in the browser. Scanned pages with no text layer have nothing to edit. Saving rasterizes only the pages you changed at 200 DPI and redraws text with Noto fonts — which is how Arabic and Chinese survive. Unedited pages stay vectors.

Can I merge more than 2 PDFs at once?

Yes — you can merge as many PDFs as you like in a single operation, subject to the total file size limit (10 MB guest, 25 MB free, 500 MB Pro).

Why did my PDF to Word conversion look wrong?

PDF to Word extraction works best on text-based PDFs. PDFs with complex multi-column layouts, tables, or scanned pages may not convert perfectly. For scanned PDFs, use AI Text Extract instead which uses vision AI to read the document.

How accurate is the compress preview?

The preview runs the same three Ghostscript commands as the real compress. The sizes you see are output file sizes, not estimates.

Does HTML to PDF print a web page like Chrome does?

No. HTML to PDF extracts visible text with Python's HTMLParser and typesets it on A4. It does not run JavaScript, load CSS, or fetch images. Use your browser's Print to PDF if you need a visual snapshot.

Does AI Form Fill return a filled PDF?

No. It returns a label-to-value map on the page so you can copy answers into the real form. It does not write AcroForm fields.

How processing works

Is PDFwarp an in-browser converter?

The site is a browser UI. Merges, compression, Office conversion, image encodes, and AI calls run on our servers (a Docker service on Railway). Thumbnails and drag-to-reorder run in your browser so you can arrange pages before the upload is processed. We do not claim that the PDF rewrite itself happens on your device.

What happens to a file after I download the result?

Uploads are written to a short-lived temp path for that request, then cleaned up. We do not keep a document library or index file contents. AI tools additionally transmit content to xAI for the request; xAI does not train on API data without permission and may retain it for up to 30 days for abuse auditing.

Why do some tool pages mention pypdf, Ghostscript, or LibreOffice?

Because those are the engines. Merge, split, reorder, and rotate copy PDF objects with pypdf. Compress uses Ghostscript (with a Pillow image fallback). Office → PDF uses headless LibreOffice. Image tools use Pillow and Poppler. AI tools extract text or page images and call xAI. The details are in each tool's "Under the hood" section.

Are the ~33 tool pages just the same template?

They share a layout (upload, steps, FAQs) so the product is learnable. The substance is per-tool: different engines, limits, and failure modes. Compress has three real Ghostscript presets and an exact size preview. Unlock uses PyMuPDF first so the file still opens in compress afterwards. HTML to PDF is a text extract, not a browser print. Those differences are documented on purpose.

Billing & Pro

How much does Pro cost?

Pro is $9 USD per month. There are no annual commitments, no setup fees, and no hidden charges. Cancel any time from your dashboard.

What payment methods are accepted?

All major credit and debit cards via Stripe. Stripe is a PCI-compliant payment processor — your card details are never stored on our servers.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes, any time. Go to Dashboard → Manage Subscription → Cancel. Your Pro access continues until the end of the current billing period.

Is there a limit on AI usage on Pro?

Pro includes unlimited file conversions. AI features are subject to a fair use policy of 30 AI calls per day to prevent abuse. This limit is more than enough for everyday document work and may be adjusted with notice.

Is there a refund policy?

If you experience technical issues preventing you from using Pro features, contact support@pdfwarp.com and we will resolve it or issue a refund.

Can I use PDFwarp for commercial purposes?

Yes. Both free and Pro accounts can be used for personal, freelance, and commercial work. There are no restrictions on the type of documents you process.
