Redaction here is a rewrite, not black boxes on the original PDF. Extracted text (up to 15,000 characters) plus your instructions go to xAI; every match is replaced with [REDACTED]; a new PDF, Word, or text file is built from that string. Layout, images, and letterhead do not survive. The original file is not patched. Pro only.
Unlike drawing black boxes over a PDF (which still have the text underneath), the output only contains [REDACTED] where the model removed a span. Copy-paste and search cannot recover those spans from the new file.
'Remove all names, phone numbers, and addresses' works better than listing each one. The model is matching patterns in the extracted text.
Unusual name formats, international phones, or informal address references slip through. Images and headers that were never extracted are still in your original — they are simply absent from this rewrite, not blacked out.
extract_text (15k cap) → xAI with a 'replace with [REDACTED], keep the rest' system prompt → output_file(), which builds PDF via ReportLab, DOCX via python-docx, or .txt. Non-Latin scripts force DOCX because ReportLab's default fonts cannot draw them.
A black box you can 'uncover' is a known PDF footgun. A rewrite cannot leak the removed words from the new file. The cost is that you no longer have the original page geometry. Do not file this output as 'the same exhibit, redacted'.
A name printed only inside a logo or a scanned stamp is not in the extracted text, so it is not sent to the model and not replaced. If the sensitive bits are in pictures, this tool will not see them.
