A .txt file has no pages, no margins, and no typeface. This tool wraps the text in a ReportLab A4 document: UTF-8 decoded, XML-escaped, one paragraph per non-empty line, extra space for blank lines. It is for notes and logs you want to share or print — not for designed layouts.
A blank line in your .txt creates a paragraph break in the PDF. If your text is one wall of prose, split it into visible paragraphs before converting or the result reads like a continuous scroll.
Special characters (é, 中文, emoji) render correctly only when the file is UTF-8 encoded. Most modern editors default to UTF-8, but older Windows Notepad can still save as ANSI — check Save As → Encoding.
Bold, italic, headings, and bullets aren't recognised in plain text. For a styled PDF with minimal effort, write in Markdown and use Markdown → PDF.
The file is decoded as UTF-8 (invalid bytes dropped), each line is XML-escaped so a stray < or & cannot break the PDF, and SimpleDocTemplate writes A4 pages. Non-empty lines become Paragraph objects; empty lines become an 8-point spacer.
ReportLab's default fonts cover Latin well and a lot of Unicode less well. Accented European text is usually fine. Dense CJK or emoji may substitute or drop. For those scripts, Markdown → PDF or Office → PDF (which have Noto/Liberation on the LibreOffice path) are the better tools.
Asterisks, hashes, and backticks are printed literally. If you want those to become headings and code, use the Markdown tool — it is a different parser on the same ReportLab backend.
ReportLab lays the text on A4 with default margins. Each non-empty line becomes a paragraph. A blank line inserts extra space. There is no heading detection and no bold.
