How to Merge PDFs on an iPhone

You can merge PDFs on an iPhone without installing an app. Open Merge PDF in Safari, add the files, put them in order, and download one PDF. The merge copies pages as they are, so text stays sharp. The parts that actually go wrong on a phone are getting the files out of Mail, keeping the order straight on a small screen, and finding the download afterward.
Get the files somewhere Safari can open
iPhone PDFs hide in three places.
- Mail. Open the message, tap the attachment, and use the share sheet to save it to Files. Saving into a folder you create, such as "To merge," beats hunting through On My iPhone later.
- Files. If someone AirDropped a PDF or you downloaded it last week, it is already here. Downloads is the usual folder for anything Safari saved.
- Photos. A picture of a page is not a PDF. The merge tool will not accept a HEIC or JPEG as if it were a document. Turn the photos into a PDF first with Images to PDF. If a file from the phone is HEIC and some other tool rejected it, HEIC to JPG is the conversion, then images-to-PDF if you still need a document. The longer version of the photo path is How to Turn iPhone Photos into a PDF.
Do this gathering before you open the merge page. Adding files one at a time from three different apps is how page 1 ends up at the end.
Merge in Safari
1. In Safari, go to Merge PDF. Chrome on iPhone works too. You do not need an account for a merge that fits the guest size limit.
2. Tap the upload area and choose the PDFs from Files. Add at least two. There is no limit on how many files. The size limit applies to all the files together.
3. Look at the order on screen before you tap Merge PDFs. The tool merges in that order. Upload order is a guess, not a plan. The server builds the file from the sequence shown, including when you interleave pages from different sources.
4. Tap Merge PDFs and wait for the download. Pages are copied with no re-render, so a crisp scan stays a crisp scan and a blurry scan stays blurry. Merging does not compress and does not improve quality.
If one file is not a real PDF, the tool tells you which one by number. If a file is damaged inside, you get an error instead of a half-merged PDF. Fix or replace that file and run the merge again. If a file asks for a password, unlock it first with Unlock PDF. Merge cannot read a locked file, and the error may only say the merge failed, not which file was locked.
Order on a small screen
On a desktop you drag thumbnails. On a phone, dragging a row can fight the page scroll. Two habits avoid a redo.
Put the files into the "To merge" folder in the order you want, then add them from top to bottom and check the list. If the list is wrong, rearrange it before you merge. Fixing order after the download means starting over for anything longer than a couple of pages, because the merged file no longer knows which pages came from which source. Merge PDFs in the Right Order is the full version of that problem.
A filename trick that fails on phones and computers alike: "section-10" sorts before "section-2." Do not trust the Files sort. Read the names.
Check the result before you send it. Open the download and scroll the first page, a middle page, and the last page. A contract with the signature page in the middle is a successful merge of the wrong plan.
Where the download goes
Safari puts the file in the Files app, in Downloads, not back into the Mail thread you started from. If you do not see a prompt, open Files, tap Browse, and look in Downloads. The merged file is a new PDF. The originals in your folder are untouched.
To send it, share that download from Files into Mail or Messages. Do not go back to the browser tab and assume the attachment updated itself.
If you used a scan-to-download QR code on a computer to pull the result onto the phone, that link works once. The copy is deleted when the phone finishes the download, or within 11 minutes if nobody scans it. The ordinary path on the phone itself is simpler: the file downloads in Safari and is deleted from PDFwarp's servers as soon as that download completes.
Size, and what will not shrink by merging
As a guest, all the files in one merge can add up to 10 MB. A free account raises that to 25 MB, and Pro to 500 MB. A PDF made from five phone photos, or one long scanned lease, can pass the guest limit on its own. Merging adds sizes. It does not reduce them. Two 4 MB files become about 8 MB.
If you are over the line, compress each piece first with Compress PDF, then merge. Compression helps when the pages are photos or scans. It barely helps a text-only PDF. The guide to a hard 1 MB email cap is How to Compress a PDF Under 1 MB for Email. Use it when the failure is the size, not the merge.
What the iPhone merge does not do
It does not install a PDF app, and it does not need one. It does not sign the packet. Signing on an iPhone is a different job, covered in How to Sign a PDF on iPhone or iPad. Merge first if you are combining a contract and an appendix, then sign the combined file, not each piece, unless the signer asked for separate signatures.
It does not keep bookmarks from the source files. A long merged packet is one scroll. If readers need to jump to an exhibit, say so in the email, or leave the files separate.
It does not add a text layer to scans. AI Scan to Text, a Pro tool, reads up to 10 pages per run and gives you a new text document instead. Merge will happily combine image-only pages into one large image-only PDF.
Privacy
The files are uploaded and processed on PDFwarp's servers, then deleted as soon as your download completes. They are not kept as a library and they are not indexed. Merge is a free tool, so this job does not send document text to an AI provider. If the packet is something you are not allowed to upload at all, combine it in an app that stays on the phone instead. FAQ
Do I need the PDFwarp app?
No. There isn't one to install for this. Safari and the Files app are enough.
Can I merge a Word document from the phone?
Not in this tool. Merge takes PDFs. Convert the Word file with Office to PDF first, save that PDF to Files, then merge.
Will the text look worse?
No. Pages are copied, not photographed again. Quality only drops if you compress before or after.
The second file is an email attachment I can see but not select.
Save it to Files from the share sheet first. The upload picker reads Files, not the inside of a Mail message.
